What is POSH Awareness Training and Why is it Important

By: Ms. Bhavana Purohit

"Why do we need such kind of training when everyone here is educated in our company and knows exactly where to draw the line?" Now, one of the heads of learning and development posed this question.

It should go without saying that if we have educated workers, then we must implement training initiatives for POSH. Unfortunately, sexual harassment has nothing to do with education. Let's attempt to comprehend POSH training.

What is POSH training?

Employees can discern between proper and inappropriate workplace behavior with the help of POSH training. Participants are also taught on the POSH Act's legal ramifications. Employees can clearly understand what behaviors qualify as sexual harassment thanks to training.

Why POSH training?

Understanding of the Act

Many employees are unaware of the basic definition of sexual harassment, and every employee must have a thorough understanding of this Act. The majority of employees believe that touching another person constitutes sexual harassment. This behavior does constitute sexual harassment, but it is not the only one.

Social Impact

Although each organization has its own set of principles, it is impossible to deny how social culture affects business culture. Employers often unwittingly bring their social learning to the workplace; for example, there may be certain behaviors that are acceptable in society but not at work.

Brand Image

The phrase "prevention is better than cure" perfectly captures the significance of POSH training. Every time a sexual harassment event occurs the next day or within a few hours, the company's reputation suffers in the media and on social media. Now that media is no longer limited to print but increasingly includes TV channels, magazines, and social media, harming the company's brand, holding awareness workshops has become crucial.

Legal Mandate

According to Section 19(c) of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013, every employer is expected to hold education sessions for all of their staff members so that they are aware of the law and how to report instances of it. If the employer did to comply, a fine of up to 50,000 may be imposed.

Venture Front's training initiatives consistently place a greater emphasis on a change in perspective than just discussing the POSH law. The essential dos and don'ts of the workplace are discussed in POSH. However, it is crucial to focus on individual owners to bring about change via training programs in order to build a respectful workplace. POSH training is created with the Indian context in mind.
